Power of Thunder Part 1

Power of Thunder (Part 1) The Wisdom of Ray Stern by Frank Meyers

A lot of new bodybuilders get focused on getting big at all costs. They have tunnel vision and that can be a good thing. Recently I dusted off an old book that’s been largely forgotten about, was underrated when published but contains many gems that can help you succeed in body building and life. This book is the Power of Thunder by Ray “Thunder” Stern and Bob Wolff. If you can find a copy of this book, buy it.

Ray Stern really put it out there. Here is a guy who got a vasectomy when he was 19. His reasoning was that he didn’t want any children getting in the way of his goals. And what were his goals? First of all being a bodybuilder was one of them. Another goal was to have a lot of money. And his final big goal was to have a good sex life. This might sound selfish or maybe just focused. In his sixties he decided to adopt Mr. Olympia Dorian Yates training methods. A lifelong bodybuilder Ray Stern stayed in shape at least until his sixties when he wrote this book. Now do you want to be just a bodybuilder or a success in other areas along with bodybuilding?  If you chose the latter, then read on.

Ray Stern dropped out of school and eventually became a champion professional wrestler. He even wrestled bears and won. Bodybuilding was always first on his agenda and was friends with the likes of Frank Zane, Joe Weider and Bob Delmonteque. If you don’t recognize those names then stay tuned to www.buildersandlifters.com or visit our facebook page at musclebuilder/power builders and lifters. Ray moved from professional wrestling to real estate development and also into owning his own charter airline company. Along the way he also became wealthy as one of the early pioneers in the health club business. Fortunately, for you dear reader, even if you don’t have his book, Ray Stern left behind some quotes which may help you with your bodybuilding, business and sex life. Here are some of Ray’s success quotes:

). ”Through the tough times I’ve adopted many philosophies and one of them is, Luxury becomes necessity immediately upon use.”

).” So let me give you an incredibly priceless piece of advice right now: It’s not how much you make that matters. It’s how much you save!”

).” If all you think about is your loved one and nothing else, you’re going to be lacking in other areas of your life. You won’t be a complete person. As a result, you’re bound to experience failure and frustration.”

). “Just don’t confuse romance and finance!”

). “If it’s a relationship you want, then go for it. But, only be in a relationship that helps you to grow, to become a better person, helps you achieve your dreams and give you what you can’t give yourself.”

). “ Jack Dempsey taught me a valuable lesson. He said to me ‘Ray, those fans out there are paying to see you. They are giving you your lifestyle. Always appreciate and respect that. Never knock them, look down on them or think that you may be be stronger, have more money or that you’re famous.’”

). “Buddy Rogers and professional wrestling taught me many valuable lessons. Among the greatest was, no matter how good you are, no matter how great you are, unless you can attract an audience and bring money in, you are not valuable. Nobody really cares who you can beat or what you can do unless you can bring in the money.”

). “There are so many times in our life that what we say ends up offending the other person when we really didn’t mean it to be that way. That old saying of “Be sure your brain is engaged before putting your mouth in gear” is never more true.”

). “If you want to be a bodybuilder, start spending time with someone who really knows bodybuilding. If you want to be rich and have millions of dollars, start spending time with someone who has made millions and is very wealthy. This is the quickest and most effective way to learn what they know. It’s called mentoring and if you ever want to achieve greatness in your life, you must find a mentor you can learn from.”

). “Ray, let me tell you something. Many times in life, you’ll get mad, you’ll get hot and bothered and you’ll want to tell people off. But remember this Ray, once you slam that door in their face, you’ll never be able to come back through that door.”

). “Being a jerk is not the way to deal with people. Not if you’re wanting to be a great success in life. You’ve got to keep the door open.”

). “The biggest thing that keeps most people from succeeding in life is that their ego won’t allow them to be humble and learn from others. Most people want to be a big shot. They can’t take criticism.”

). “Personal growth is something that you’re never too young nor too old for. The most successful people in life constantly work on it and as a result, they are the people that we look up to and respect.”

). “Think, think, think about your goals and dreams and never stop believing-no matter how far off those goals look or how hard the road in front of you may seem. If you want it so bad you can taste it, you will be a success! And remember, there’s always a way to make whatever you want to happen, happen!”

). “I believe that if you want something bad enough, you will do whatever it takes to achieve it.”

). “I quickly learned that it doesn’t matter how much you make. What counts is how much you keep. A solid tax plan is not an option it’s a necessity to help you keep as much as possible!”

). “I came to the conclusion that I wasn’t getting any smarter every year. It was time for me to get less dumb! Do less stupid things every year than I did the previous year.”

). “A successful man is one who repeats his successful actions and learns from and eliminates those actions and attitudes that don’t bring him success. In other words, keep your good habits and get rid of the bad ones.”

). “The ego can be one of your greatest allies for success or it can be your biggest destroyer if you’re not careful.”

). “One of my earliest business philosophies has been to lease my properties and businesses whenever possible as opposed to selling them. Leasing allows you to receive long-term income from your properties, while you’re still able to retain ownership after each lease expires. That’s a great way to create long-term wealth.

). “In order to truly succeed in any area of your life, you must think and plan in five and ten year increments. This is very important!”

). “Being great in whatever you do takes time. Short-term gain always equals long-term pain and don’t let anyone tell you any different.”

). “Bodybuilding teaches you to be patient and wait for the results.”

). “Today, because of the lessons I learned from bodybuilding and I applied to all of my businesses, I am a multimillionaire and I’m in the best shape of my life-and I’m over 60!”

). “Another very important lesson is be careful of who you associate with. You can live the cleanest life possible, yet, if you associate with the wrong people, it can damage your reputation. The old saying is true, ‘You are judged by the company you keep.’”

). “My advice to you is for whatever you’re involved in, plan for any and all things, cover your bases and always leave yourself a back door! You’ll be glad you did.”

). “One of the reasons many people fail in life is because they want what they want and they want it now. But that’s not the way real long-term success is ever achieved. In life, you must crawl before you walk, walk before you run, and keep running and not stop until you reach the finish line-the achievement of your goals and dreams.”

). “I’m proud to say that I have many of the very best aviation specialists in the world working for me. These people are highly committed to their craft and it shows in the work they do. I couldn’t have built my multi-million dollar business without them.”

). “It’s been said that people are important to your business. That’s a mistake. People are your business. Make no mistake about it!”

).”With each new adventure, love affair or business venture, I always learned an important and valuable lesson. That’s a major key to success. Learning from your successes and failures and applying those lessons to every area of your life. The unsuccessful don’t learn from their mistakes and they keep repeating them. Don’t be like them. Be a success and experience the kind of life that’s possible for you!”

). “You must thoroughly prepare yourself if you’re moving from a small town to a big city like New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco etc. The small-town friendliness and caring attitude can help open many doors for you. However, just be prepared. The fast and hectic pace of the big city can be overwhelming unless you prepare your business success plan completely.”

). “However great your accomplishments, just remember that every day is yesterday’s newspaper. That means that you can’t rely on what you did yesterday to carry you through today. You have to constantly go out and take action and do the things that will bring you closer to your goals. You have to think tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow.”

). “Seeing my multi-million dollar fortune evaporate overnight left me with a very valuable, yet painful lesson: Don’t invest or be involved in anything that you do not have control over. To keep your fortune, you must guard it carefully and invest it wisely.”

). “With each new adventure, love affair or business venture, I always learned an important and valuable lesson. That’s a major key to success. Learning from your successes and failures and applying those lessons to every area of your life. The unsuccessful don’t learn from their mistakes and they keep repeating them. Don’t be like them. Be a success and experience the kind of life that’s possible for you!”

). “I believe that in order for you to be really successful you must: What-ever subject or field that you’re interested in, find someone who has more knowledge than you. In other words, find an expert, one who’s the best in their field, and learn all you can from him or her.”

). “You must plan for the future and never leave your life in the hands of someone else’s decision. Take control of your life and create it to be anything that you dream!”

). “The lesson to be learned is very clear: Whether you’re in business or in bodybuilding, you must have an alternate plan in the event that your goals are not reached. The most unsuccessful people I’ve observed-whether they be in business, bodybuilding or any other sport-are those who only have one plan and they think about nothing else. And, if and when they meet with a setback, they continue to use the same plan over and over until they finally give up in frustration.”

). “The real winners in business, bodybuilding, sport or whatever, are those who have a big dream and goal, yet have many plans that they can use in order to achieve it.”

). “Think about it: If you’re not achieving the big goal you’ve set your heart on, is it wise for you to continue being the bridesmaid for the next five years or so? I think not. You need to be realistic and have alternative plans just in case you don’t achieve your goal.”
